I like workstations in general and use whatever tool is appropriate for the situation. In most cases this includes C programming at various levels (from serial communication and networking to X11 and Motif) and shell scripts in one form or another. Recently I've written a language with some hints of AWK tailored for serial communication, making it possible to write a shell script which uses a modem to fetch for instance logger data.
In the past I have created libraries to help porting Indic's main product Airviro from Starbase to X11/Motif, including generic plotting primitives and vectorized map drawing with support for PostScript.
